The Golden age of boxing
|
There's nothing better than watching a good fight, I was born in 66 so I can remember the 70's pretty good.
In the 70's we had the Heavyweights,
We had Ali, Frazier, Norton and Foreman duking it out, some classic battles, I still think Norton won the 3rd fight against Ali. But some great fights with the Ali Frazier fights being considered by many the toughest. I always thought Ronnie Lyle was worth a mention too, he had an epic battle with Foreman.
In the 80's it was the middleweights
Hagler (my personal favorite,) Leonard, Hearns and Duran. Some great fights, Hagler v Hearns was insane.
We also had in the late 80's Benn, Watson and Eubank, some great fights there too, Heavyweights gave us Tyson in his prime.
In the 90's we the heavyweight division: Tyson, Bowe Holyfield and Lewis, some memorable fights there, the Bowe v Holyfield trilogy was one of the best.
We also had Roy Jones Jr and Julio Caesar Chavez dominating the lower weight classes. Chaves had 115 fights with 107 wins.....Incredible.
Lets not forget De La Hoya, Mosley, Trinidad going at it at the end of the decade.
in the 2000's we had the lightweight and flyweights: Gatti v Ward and Barrera v Morales both Trilogies and all 6 fights were full of action....Amazing fights and fighters. We also had Manny Pacquio named as fighter of the decade by the boxing writers association of America.
Some amazing battles and men, for me the 80's shade it but it is definitely debatable.
Best announcer has to be Al Bernstein, better than Carpenter in my opinion.
Best ref...Harry Gibbs, some might argue Mills lane.
What decade stands out the most to you and what fight is most memorable.

The first Duran v SRL fight was a good brawl which Duran won. One of only 3 loses and the other 2 were well into his later years. And he was practically blind then.
But SRL mullered Duran in the "No Mas" fight.
Benn v Maclellan was a brutal fight.
I never rated Eubanks except for the fact he had a granite chin.

For me SRL pound for pound was the best.
It's strange I remember his fight agaiist Hagler and at the time arguing with a mate I thought Hagler won it...just.I actually watched it again a few months ago and didn't apprecaite how incredible SRL was. Delivering these super fast combination off the ropes as Hagler though he had him tied up. Hagler being the guy who demoished Hearns in that 3 round carnage and beat The Hand's of Stone. I think over the distance.
Pure brilliance.

forgot the Hagler Mugabi fights, some punishing body shots and punches thrown there and Diego Corales in the 2000's had some epic fights, especially the win against Costillo one of the most amazing come backs ever.
Boom Boom Mancini v Livingston Bramble were also good fights in the 80's
